Known for its buzzing nightlife and culturally diverse community, Adams Morgan is a world unto its own in DC.

Originally named after two formerly segregated elementary schools (desegregated in 1955), this neighborhood has been reborn into a progressive, inclusive community focused on social justice and political activism.

The Good

What really makes living in Adams Morgan so attractive? It’s the eclectic atmosphere and endless list of interesting things to see and do on 18th Street. Over the years, a melting pot of cultures has formed a completely one-of-a-kind community. Of note is the area’s long-running Adams Morgan Day festival, which celebrated its 39th year in September.

The neighborhood’s inclusivity goes beyond its culture; Adams Morgan is one of the most pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly neighborhoods in DC. Plus, it’s right next to other popular neighborhoods including Dupont Circle and Columbia Heights.

The Bad

This is a high-energy neighborhood that draws a lively crowd – if you’re looking for quiet nights, you’ll have to move farther from the action. And if you’re looking to venture into the heart of the neighborhood, you’ll find sparse options for parking – especially on weekend evenings.

Another of the area’s disadvantages? There’s no Metrorail system inside the neighborhood itself. The nearest major station is across Rock Creek at Woodley Park-Zoo Metro Station, which is about a 15-minute walk to the main strip of shops, bars, and restaurants.
